Trade finance is the group of financial tools that help businesses buy and sell across borders. It exists because international trade carries gaps: a seller wants to be paid before releasing goods, while a buyer wants the goods before paying. Trade finance helps close that gap.
The problems it addresses
- Payment risk: will the buyer pay, and will the seller deliver?
- Cash-flow timing: money is spent on goods long before customers pay.
- Distance and unfamiliarity: parties may never have met and operate under different legal systems.
Common tools
Typical tools include letters of credit, bank guarantees, standby letters of credit, invoice-based funding and supplier credit. Each fits different situations, and each comes with fees, conditions and documentation requirements.
Where to start
Before choosing a tool, be clear about the goods, the countries involved, the payment terms you have agreed, and the risk you are most concerned about. A well-prepared description of the transaction makes any discussion with a bank or adviser far more productive.
